How to Install Opticks on Ubuntu (tested on 10.04 LTS):

Thanks for vera for the original HOWTO.

There are two ways to install Opticks on Ubuntu: using apt (or synaptic) and a manual install

Using apt

You need to add the Opticks apt repository to your configuration. This only needs to be done once. After it is configured, updates to your packages should automatically detect new versions of Opticks.

  1. Download the Opticks apt repository signature verification key from here.
  2. Start Synaptic from the System/Administration menu
  3. Select Settings/Repositories
  4. In the Other Software tab, select Add
  5. Enter deb http://opticks.org/downloads/apt/ Opticks contrib as the APT line and select Add
  6. In the Authentication tab select Import Key File
  7. Locate the apt.pubkey file you downloaded earlier and import it.
  8. Select Close
  9. Select Reload

You should now be able to install Opticks using Synaptic, apt-get, or any other apt tool.

Manual process
  1. Download opticks .deb from opticks.org
  2. double click the installer (must be on your local hard drive).
How to run Opticks

Opticks is located in /opt/Opticks. You can run /opt/Opticks/Bin/Opticks or /opt/Opticks/Bin/OpticksBatch to execute the program. You'll also find Opticks in the Applications/Graphics group in the start menu.

AEB extensions

To install extensions you have to run it as root: gksu /opt/Opticks/Bin/Opticks. When Opticks is running, either drag and drop and AEB into the application or go to Help/Extensions and install the AEB from that dialog.

An alternate way to install extensions from the command line is to copy one or more AEB files into /opt/Opticks/Extensions/AutoInstall then run /opt/Opticks/Bin/OpticksBatch as root.

If you click the fit to screen (on zooming toolbar) you will see the image flash and then disapear.

This is an issue with ATI video card card incompatibility. There are some known issues with Opticks and some ATI/AMD video cards.
