The entire server infrastructure for Opticks is being transitioned to new hardware and data center. Below are the details about this transition. This page will be updated as the transition occurs to indicate which services have been transitioned. The bulk of the transition is expected to be completed no later than December 20th, 2010.

Services That Are Being Eliminated As of December 20th, 2010


Obsolete Source Code Repositories - TRANSITION COMPLETE

The repository at https://opticks.ballforge.net/svn/opticks will be eliminated. If you are currently using this repository, it is already obsolete and you should have already transitioned to the current repository located at https://opticks.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/opticks/. In addition, if you were browsing the contents of the repository using https://opticks.ballforge.net/source/browse/opticks/, this is also being eliminated and you should instead be using http://opticks.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/opticks/.

The repository at https://extras.ballforge.net/svn/extras/ will be eliminated. If you are currently using this repository, it is already obsolete and you should have already transitioned to the current repository located at https://opticks-extras.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/opticks-extras/. In addition, if you were browsing the contents of the repository using https://extras.ballforge.net/source/browse/extras/, this is also being eliminated and you should instead be using http://opticks-extras.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/opticks-extras/.

Mailing List Archives

The complete developer mailing list archive on opticks.ballforge.net is being eliminated. An 80% complete mirror of this archive is currently available on nabble.com. An attempt to re-create the complete archive in some form will be attempted after December 20th, 2010. This recovery attempt may not include all messages in the current and complete archive. If you require any particular messages not available via nabble.com, please retrieve them prior to December 20th, 2010. See below for details on what is occurring to the developer mailing list in general.

The complete user mailing list archive on opticks.ballforge.net is being eliminated. An attempt to re-create the archive in some form will be attempted after December 20th, 2010. ballforge.net user accounts - TRANSITION COMPLETE

Any information associated with a user account you currently have on http://www.ballforge.net will be eliminated on December 20th. If you want to preserve the data, please retrieve prior to December 20th, 2010.

@ballforge.net e-mail accounts - TRANSITION COMPLETE

When you created a user account on ballforge.net, you were provided a forwarding e-mail address of [username]@ballforge.net. This e-mail address and forwarding service will be eliminated on December 20th, 2010 and all messages sent to it will bounce. If you are actively using this e-mail address, please switch over to a different e-mail address.

Third-party Dependency Packages For Opticks 4.3.X and earlier - TRANSITION COMPLETE

Using the dependency.py Python script to retrieve 3rd party dependency packages for any versions of Opticks 4.3.X and earlier will no longer function after December 20th, 2010. However, the packages will be available for manual download from http://opticks.org/ for the duration of this transition.

Services Being Transitioned


Mailing List - TRANSITION COMPLETE

New mailing lists to replace the existing developer and user mailing lists on ballforge.net will be set-up as part of the opticks project on sourceforge.net. This will be done before December 20th, 2010. All existing subscribers to the mailing lists on ballforge.net will be automatically added as subscribers to the new mailing lists on sourceforge.net. Once this has been accomplished, the ability to post to the mailing lists on ballforge.net will be disabled. The entire transition to the new mailing lists will be accomplished before December 20th, 2010. After December 20th, 2010 the ballforge.net mailing lists will be eliminated and only the new mailing lists on sourceforge.net will remain.

As mentioned earlier, the mailing list archives for ballforge.net may be lost during this transition, but a best effort at recovery will be made after December 20th, 2010.

Website (opticks.org) - TRANSITION COMPLETE

The website content on http://opticks.org will be down sometime before December 20th, 2010. All attempts will be made to minimize this downtime, the goal is one day or less of downtime.

Bug/Enhancement Tracker - TRANSITION COMPLETE

The bug/enhancement tracker at https://issues.ballforge.net/ will NOT experience any downtime before December 20th, 2010. After December 20th, 2010 there will be some downtime to move ownership of DNS records. All attempts will be made to minimize this downtime, the goal is one week or less of downtime.

Software Downloads and Dependency Downloads

The Opticks software downloads, extension downloads and other downloads will be down sometime before December 20th, 2010. The 3rd party dependency packages (retrieved using dependency.py) for Opticks 4.5.0rc1, 4.5.0rc2, 4.5.0 will also be down sometime before December 20th, 2010. All attempts will be made to minimize this downtime, the goal is one day or less of downtime. - TRANSITION COMPLETE

Using the dependency.py Python script to retrieve 3rd party dependency packages for Opticks 4.4.0 and Opticks 4.4.1 will experience downtime after December 20th, 2010. This service will be restored sometime after December 20th, 2010, the goal is four weeks or less of downtime.

On-line SDK Docs - TRANSITION COMPLETE

The on-line Opticks SDK documentation at http://opticks.org/docs/ will be down sometime before December 20th, 2010. The goal is one week or less of downtime. You can download an Opticks SDK which contains the same documentation and read the documentation off-line to avoid being affected by this downtime.

Nightly Builds - TRANSITION COMPLETE

The nightly installers built from the latest source available at http://opticks.org/builds/ will be down sometime before December 20th, 2010. The goal is one week or less of downtime.

Announcements and Opticks Spectrum RSS feeds - TRANSITION COMPLETE

The RSS feed for official project announcements, http://feeds2.feedburner.com/OpticksAnnouncements, and the RSS feed for our collection of blogs, http://feeds2.feedburner.com/OpticksSpectrum], will be down sometime before December 20th, 2010. The goal is one week or less of downtime.

IRC logs - TRANSITION COMPLETE

The already archived logs, found at http://opticks.org/irclogs/ of chats occurring in the #opticks channel on http://www.freenode.net IRC server will be down sometime before December 20th, 2010. The goal is one week or less of downtime.

Before December 20th, 2010 the archiving service is also expected to be down, which will result in a gap during which activity in the #opticks channel on http://www.freenode.net IRC server will not be captured. If okibot is present in the channel then archiving is being performed. If okibot is not logged into the channel then no archiving of the chat is being performed. The goal is one week or less of downtime for this archive service.
