Description

This arc contains descriptions of contexts and serializations used to represent data types, protocols, etc.

A serialization is a way of representing an abstract data type or protocol on disk, in memory, or on a transmission circuit. A serialization sub-arc should contain a complete representation and definition of the serialization or information on locating externally defined definitions. Examples of serializations are the ASN.1 representations CER and DER.

A context is a less structured informational element similar to a serialization. It defines show the context should be used and general heuristics on representing data. An example of a non-serialization context would be a way of representing a data type to a user for display purposes.

Contexts and serializations are generic methods of data representation and generally should not change so versioning information is not needed. If a description is ambiguous or lacking certain detail, it may be updated provided it does not invalidate legitimate files or protocols already using that context.

Data type definitions will often describe abstract values and tokens and then list one or more contexts and serializations to define how to represent the data type in that context. It is suggested that the contexts be referenced by OID and optionally with a link to the description page for that context OID.
